Proceed vs. Precede

Precede表示在其它事物之前发生或者到来。例如：

An abstract should precede the introduction and discussion sections of a paper.
摘要应放在论文的介绍和讨论部分之前。

而proceed表示开始或继续某个动作，也可以表示向前走。例如：

After receiving feedback from the reviewers, the researchers proceeded to make the necessary revisions to their manuscript.
在收到了审稿人的反馈后，研究者们继续对他们的文稿进行必要的修改。

有一个简单的方法来区别这两个词：precede和先前发生的事情有关，而proceed和之后发生的事情有关。

Further vs. Farther

写作过程当中如何在further和farther中做选择是个棘手的问题。当你在句子中使用further时，你所表达的是在已经发生的事物之外额外发生的。例如：

The new software further upset the frustrated user.
新软件让本就倍感挫败的用户们更加烦恼。

在这个例子中，用户本来就很挫败，而新软件（很有可能无法正常运行）进一步火上浇油了。Further也可以表示提升或进步：

She was hoping that publishing her paper would further her career.
她希望发表论文能推进她的职业规划。

与此不同的是，如果你在句子中用的是farther，你表示的则是一个物理距离（可测量的）。例如：

Where did the ball go? The ball rolled farther down the hill.
球到哪里去了？球滚到了山下的远处。

Fare vs. Fair

Fare描述的是事物进展情况、某人对事件的处理应付情况。例如：

How did you fare with the tight publication deadline?
你是如何应付紧张的截稿期限的？

Fare也可以表示乘车费用：

The bus fare was expensive.
公交车费很贵。

和fare相比，fair的含义则复杂得多。Fair有多个意思。它可以表示“公正”，例如：

The defendant demanded a fair trial.
被告方要求公正的判决。

它也可以表示符合规则或常规：

The athletes did not play fair and broke just about every rule.
运动员们没有公平比赛，违反了几乎所有规则。

另外，fair也可以表示好天气：

The skies were fair, which eased our travel worries.
天气很好，缓解了我们对旅途的担忧。

Fair还有“集会”的意思，例如county fair（集市），job fair（招聘会）。最后，fair还可以表示“精巧、精细”，例如：

She had to wear a bonnet to protect her fair skin from the sun.
她要带上帽子来保护她纤细的肌肤免受暴晒。

由此可见，这些乍看之下很相似的单词有着非常不同的含义。
